Captain "Sun" (also known in Thai as Sayan) was born in Ratchaburi, Thailand, not far from Bangkok. At
11 years old he entered the Sangkhatan Monastary in Nonthaburi, Sun spent the next 10 years of his early life as a novice monk. During that time he embarked on a pilgrimage to Burma, he walked with his Theravada Buddhist teachers and a fellow novice for over 3 years. They returned by foot back to Bangkok, Thailand. At 21 years of age Sun left his monastic life and trained as a professional chef in Bangkok. He worked for 7 years at the Rainforest Resort near Phisanulok, he moved to Ko Lanta in southern Thailand and worked on the Island of Ko Kom at the Wasana Resort with his sister Pe Latt.
His dream for many years was to captain his own Long tail boat and learn the
intricate nature of the sea. In 1999, he fulfilled that dream and purchased his
first long tail boat. Today Sun is the proud owner of his third boat, each one a
little bigger than the last. During low season, Captain Sun can be found with
the other locals, fishing with traditional nets and hand lines. He sells his catch within the local community. Captain Sun and his wife Susanna, have operated Sun Island Tours for over 8 years from their seafront pole house in Old Town, Ko Lanta.
